After two years, Ahlstrom-Munksjö officially launched its new glass fiber tissue building in Madisonville on Wednesday with with a ceremonial ribbon cutting to open the $68 million expansion.

The new facility, which was announced in May 2021, will house a glass fiber tissue production line to make substrates for flooring materials. The company’s current 133-employee facility in Madisonville produces filtration materials for automotive and industrial applications.

Ahlstrom has put $68 million into the new facility which will create over 50 new full-time jobs for Hopkins County.

Pekka Helynranta, Ahlstrom’s vice president of Glass Fiber Tissue, said this investment demonstrates the company’s commitment to Madisonville and its customers in North America.

“The new glass fiber tissue line substantially enhances our regional technical capabilities, bolstering our capability to provide sustainable solutions for the building materials industry while expanding our production capacity in America,” she said. “This new platform will further strengthen our leadership in the glass fiber tissue market by consolidating our global position in flooring applications and giving us a unique platform to expand into other glass fiber tissue applications.”

“In this specific case with this line we are opening today, we have the solution to actually partner with customers and suppliers to actually bring sustainable solutions to the world of building and construction,” she said. “We have invested in the US to expand our opportunity to grow with customers here in the us.”

During the dedication, Governor Andy Beshear said he couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate October being Manufacturing Month than at the Ahlstrom dedication.

“This company’s success is part of an era of prosperity where Kentucky is becoming a national economic leader,” he said. “I want to congratulate Ahlstrom on this significant milestone in Madisonville.”

Ahlstrom has been part of Madisonville for nearly 50 years, and the new operation builds on the economic momentum in the Commonwealth, said Beshear.

“I want to thank the company’s leadership for allowing me to join them in cutting the ribbon on the new facility, and I look forward to seeing Ahlstrom continue to thrive here in Kentucky,” he said.

Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton said he was excited to celebrate not only the opening of a new facility at Ahlstrom but also the promise of prosperity, the power of partnership, and the resilience of the community.

“This expansion signifies not only growth in infrastructure but also the growth of opportunities for the citizens,” he said.

Ahlstrom’s investment is also an investment in Madisonville’s economic future by creating jobs and fostering innovation, said Cotton.

Jack Whitfield Jr., the Hopkins County Judge Executive, said Ahlstrom has proven itself as one of the area’s top investors. They seize every opportunity to expand, grow, and help put Hopkins County on the map.

“This new production facility is the only one of its kind in the United States, and Ahlstrom leaders chose to launch its American glass fiber tissue factory in the same place it has seen phenomenal success for the past 49 years,” he said. “We are grateful to Ahlstrom and its relationship with the community, and we look forward to seeing the company advance in Madisonville for decades to come.”
